There are so many musicals and plays that include different types of stage fighting: slaps, punches, hair pulls, slow-motion fights, trips, slips, falls, and more. Fights can be dramatic, funny, vicious, and ridiculous. Like songs in a musical, stage combat tells the story when words are not enough.  The goal is to make these appear realistic to an audience but MUST guarantee SAFETY and continuity for the actors on stage. The main rule of stage combat is SAFETY first, SAFETY last, and SAFETY always. James has helped teach college classes, as well as high school and camp workshops throughout New York State. James will help you learn basic stage combat in a SAFE, controlled environment. Students will be instructed in SAFE procedures involved in stage combat. Students will understand the SAFETY rules, terminology, and basic skills of stage fighting. An actor should never be asked to do something that makes them feel unsafe. James will make sure to empower students to be able to speak up if they ever feel unsure or unsafe about a move or direction. Students will use these tools to create unique fights of their own creation.

James O’Connor is a Long Island based actor, singer, and fight director/choreographer/captain. Most recently he has choreographed fights in CM’s A Bronx Tale, Elf and Footloose. Some of his favorite acting credits include Aramis (The Three Musketeers), Tybalt (Romeo and Juliet), Poins (Henry IV Part 1) and Charles (As You Like It).
